Boats

 

Kentucky law requires all boats being used on public waters to be registered.

RENEWAL:

  1. Previous year registration.
  2. Ad valorem tax is due at time of renewal.
  3. Payment in full

OUT OF STATE BOATS – NEW OR USED

  1. Original title or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin
  2. Lien papers if applicable.  Signed by owner(s)
  3. Buyers section of boat BTR must be filled out completely, signed and notarized
  4. Personal ID
  5. Transaction will not take place if owner has delinquent taxes on this boat or other boats
  6. Payment in full

BOAT TRANSFERS IN KENTUCKY

SELLER:

  1. Must have Kentucky title if boat was titled, if not, must have last issued registration
  2. Back of Kentucky title must be signed and notarized
  3. All liens must be released off front of Kentucky title
  4. Seller has responsibility to see that the title is transferred out of his/her name.
  5. If owned January 1st, taxes for that year stay with seller and are due upon transfer if past due.  The tax is due within thirty (30) days from the date of the transfer to avoid penalties and late fees

BUYER:

  1. Back of Kentucky title must be signed and notarized
  2. Sign and complete buyers section (right side) of boat BTR and have notarized
  3. Lien papers if applicable, signed by owner(s)
  4. Transaction will not take place if seller has delinquent taxes on this boat
  5. Payment in full

SELLING OUT OF STATE

  1. Must have Kentucky title
  2. Back of Kentucky title must be signed and notarized
  3. Seller should fill out an Affidavit at Clerk’s office stating disposition of boat.  Taxes should be paid at this time, if taxes were not paid prior.

JUNKED BOATS:

  1. Bring Kentucky title into the Clerk’s office.  A boat cannot be junked without the Kentucky title.  If you have lost or misplaced your title you may request a duplicate title; the charge for the duplicate title is $6.00.
  2. All liens must be released before boat can be junked.
  3. All taxes must be paid at that time, if taxes were not paid prior.
